Logline

Under the Yellow Sky is a documentary about the life and survival of civilians in the frontline city of Zaporizhzhia during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine – their solidarity, resilience and the desperately fast growing up of children. This is war through the eyes of children.

Synopsis

A thick curtain of yellow smoke hangs over Zaporizhzhia. The air is critically polluted by hazardous industrial emissions, while the front line is only 45 kilometres away.

The city is subjected to attacks by the Russian army using aerial bombs, ballistic missiles and drones, and air-raid sirens sound almost around the clock. Yet its residents continue their everyday lives, finding motivation in their children and in their continuous support for those defending the country.

When the front line is so close, almost every resident becomes a volunteer.

Director’s Vision

I want to bring the viewer into the everyday lives of people living through war without interfering in their personal space. The camera becomes an almost invisible presence, quietly observing their sorrows, joys and daily routines. Through the parallel lives of Sasha and Kira, the film explores how children adapt, grow up and find moments of ordinary life in extraordinary circumstances.
